PCI Specification

I’m presently working on a Network Miniport driver and i need more
informations about the PCI spec.
Intel site refer to the document PCI Local Bus Specification rev. 2.3 and
the only one i found is the version 2.2 .

Do you have an idea where we can get this document ?

Thanks

I’ve tried but we need to be registered and it’s not free.

You really think something that is so widely in use would be free?

If you want the official specs your organization has to register. Price
of doing business etc. etc. If you don’t really need the official spec
the Mindshare PCI book series are very good.

Nobody can give you the spec legitimately.

I just needed some details on how PCI is working. That’s why i don’t think
interesting to register at PCISIG.

Thanks for the informations.

I know it is a pain, but there is a cost of doing business even if you are
raising chickens for their eggs. You have to buy the chicks, feed, vet
bills, housing, and labor to feed them and collect the eggs daily.

If you don’t want to pay for the tools needed, you are in the wrong world.
There are no standard organizations that give their specifications for free.
SCSI, CD formats, ANSI, ISO, USB, etc. all require that companies and
individuals that want access to their help and specifications require
payment.

Well actually the usb group gives their specs away for free, and the T10
specs, all except the ‘final’ versions, are downloadable. I find the
spec hiding by pcisig stupid, but it is their choice and their specs and
as you and I have said, it is the cost of doing business. The Mindshare
books are sufficient for most purposes at a much lower price.

I agree with Mark on almost everything of this post. It is stupid of the
PCI Sig and the Mindshare books are pretty good. But, if you are developing
the hardware, be sure to have a copy of the actual specification. Twice,
I’ve been bitten by hardware designed with only the Mindshare books, that
had probelms, since there are bugs in the books. In one case a really hairy
hack to Windows (this was an embedded system where we had total control) got
around the problem, in the other the contract shut down since the hardware
had to be redone, and the startup was out of money!
