I’m looking for some advice on 19" LCD displays. My current 21" monitor is
dying and since I can’t afford something as nice as a well known
pontificator (dual 21" NEC LCD’s according to his latest pontification), I’m
looking for peoples experiences and recomendations on various brands of 19"
LCD’s. Currently I am hoping for a display with both DVI and analog
inputs, and don’t see the need for the swivel capabilities.
Any comments on list or off would be appreciated.

The viewsonic 19 is DVI/Analog, reasonable in price and quality. Can’t
remember the model number though 'cause it is in my office and I’m not.

I have a Dell 1702FP on my desk, and I’m pretty happy with it. At home I
have one of those marvelous SGI 1600SW (that’s a 1600x1200 monitor, you can
look it up at http://www.sgi.com/products/legacy/displays.html, but as the
website title suggests, it’s a “legacy” display. The only board I know that
supports it well is the Number Nine “Ticket to Ride 4”, and I’m so fond of
that display that I have hoarded a small collection of T2R4’s at home so
that I don’t run out of cards for that display. I also have an NEC 17 inch,
I personally like 17 inch flat panels better than 19 inch, they look crisper
to me, and I’m no longer a kid ! I’m also impressed by the Sony 19 inch, I
forget its model name, it’s also very crisp.
Alberto.

I got a great deal on a Sony 18". It only does 1280x1024, but that is OK and
it was only 600 new.

Dell’s FPs are great. I have the newer 1901FP (19") and it is awesome.
I got for around $500 from dell.com. Super bright and real easy to
read. You need to buy it on sale though (which it goes on quite
regularly, there are bunch of web sites which monitors dell’s site and
tell when it does go on sale).

I have been using ViewSonic LCDs since 1999, starting with 15" VP150 and
today I have 19" VX900 and have been quite happy with the quality and
capability. For example, VP150 had an analog input and would work just fine
through one of multi-machine switches, while one of models from another
company would lose contrast and color and become unusable. Of course, using
a DVI input should fix these problems, but I haven’t seen a DVI switch, and
you mus have a DVI card.
Not all screens are equal. You really should look at it in the store before
you buy. Cheaper models might have an LCD that wouldn’t look uniformly
bright because of different viewing angle between the center and sides.
