NOTE: I do NOT work for Numega or Compuware. We’ve
had to use their tools for some very nasty, intermittent problems
over the years. We also used their tools to rebuild some
data from trashed systems.
Bounds Checker is a robust product with a long history as a
resource for checking object-allocation errors that are not caught
by compilers. It also catches boundary and allocation errors
in dynamically-allocated threads and other types of errors
that are very hard to track down. It has the capability to track
single-step or breakpoint on object variables, constants or
method invocation at runtime. I have been told that M*soft
uses this product “in-house” for their development of new
OS’s and products.
I understand there are versions of Bounds Checker for
VB, C, C++, Java and all the scripting languages.
You might be interested in looking at their SoftICE product
as well, which was their first. It provided the core capabilities
mentioned above for C & VB – “way back” in '92/'93.
If you need to look at your “FSD filter driver”, you might want
to look at their “Driver Studio” product which provides OS-
appropriate driver-development support tools for all platforms
from Win9x to WinNT, Win200, ME and even the new
XP & Whistler OS’s.
I believe the company was purchased by Compuware
about two years ago. Compuware is a nationwide consulting
company with a large presence in the Midwest.
BoundsChecker, SoftICE & DriverCentral remind me of
Lightwave (for you 3D folks): it is unlikely that your
problem will exceed the capabilities of the product. By the
way, their tech support people are on top of the product and
know how to apply them.
