Does anyone else see problems with this list when viewed through a
newsreader like OutlookExpress now? The titles and actual messages are not
in sync for me, and they seem randomly skewed. For instance, I click on a
topic with title “NP DLL and new Office’s FileOpen dialog” from Maxim and
the message I see is titled “Re: Synchronizing access to a linked list” from
Gary Little. I am subscribed to about 12 newsgroups/lists and this is the
only one which is exhibiting this behavior. Is it just me?

At work I use Outlook in mail mode as well. At home, I use Pegasus. I
never tried to access it in newsgroup mode, but I can try. How does one
do it ? I use Agent to read my newsgroups.

I use OE for this list, but… in email mode, not newsgroup one.

Bad news reader. I heard it will be fixed soon to handle multiple news
servers. I use lists.osr.com. You have to use your email address and
password as you normally use when you access your account via the web
browser interface. You then get threaded messages and can change your
view to see older messages in the same thread whenever you want. I also
use my local ISP’s news server and news.Microsoft.com both of which do
not require a password. My ISP only allows access from internal IP
addresses and Microsoft doesn’t restrict access. I get Outlook Express
to update all news groups with one ‘Sync All’ button request. You have
to add that ‘Sync All’ button to the toolbars, but it then works well.
The ‘Send/Receive’ button only does email (all) or the newsgroup you
have currently selected.

I would guess that the reason your client has just started having problems
is due to the fact that the mail daemon used for this mailing list is now
formatting replies as:
Re: [ntdev] Subject
Whereas before they were formatted as:
[ntdev] Re: Subject
The change appears to have started on 12/29 somewhere in the morning. This
is just a guess, but seems likely that it could cause a problem with your
news reader. I personally prefer the original format.

For me, OE handles 3 news servers fine off 1 identity. One of them is
password-protected.
The annoying bug is: if it cannot connect to the news server due to
IP-address-level restrictions of the news server - the newsgroups disappear
from the list forever, and are no more available in the overall newsgroup list
of the connection. You need to re-create the account. The annoying bug which
persists for years.
to update all news groups with one ‘Sync All’ button request. You have
to add that ‘Sync All’ button to the toolbars, but it then works well.
Why use a pull down menu for something you may use many times every day?
I like having the toolbar icon. Not that hard to do. I normally only
do an automatic check of email and news groups once an hour. I have
three also, but not all have the same name. Some contain anti-spam
names.

I suspect some event (a one-off, I hope) in the last week or so. I last synchronized my OE newsreader to this list a couple of days ago, and saw the behaviour you describe. The windbg list also showed a few hundred “new” messages going back at least a year. Today everything seems fine.

Hmmm… It might have something to do with the upgrade SNoone did to Lyris last week.
OSR has been closed for holidays between 19 Dec and 5 Jan. As noted on OSR Online, we’ve been doing network infrastructure and other upgrades during that time.
Sorry for any inconvenience. Please be sure to let us know if these problems recur…

You bet! Thunderbird by Mozilla (www.mozilla.org) - a modern, integrated
news&mail client with advanced junk-mail filtering. It’s only drawback
is that it’s still in pre-release and is a champion memory hog, but I
haven’t found any program yet that can do half of what it does in one
package.

Is there any better newsreader other than OE?
