It seems list members may not be aware of the possible methods for accessing
this newsgroup, NTFSD, and WINDBG:
-
Via EMAIL - You can get “real time” email, a digest of all the email sent
once a day, or an index of the postings that have been sent.
-
Via NEWSREADER - Join the list from the interactive web page, specify a
password. Set your newsreader up with your email address and password as
“login information” and then point your newsreader of choice to
lists.osr.com – Note that anybody can read this list via a newsreader. The
username/password is only required to POST to the list.
-
Via WEB interface - Presently ugly and painful, this interface is
scheduled for a complete overhaul just as soon as the list slave and his
companions have the time to install the software. This will make searching
and reading the list much less annoying via the web.
In terms of newsreaders, use whichever you choose (as long as it supports
“private” newsgroups). Personally, I use the Outlook Express news reader
just cuz it’s there by default. Be aware, however, that Outlook Express
appears to miss messages - in fact it’ll miss entire topics - now and again.
I have no idea why.
The above is documented in the joining notes for new members. Not that
anybody reads joining notes,
Peter

Just wanted to let you know that my newsreader (Forté Agent) is set up
for “No login information required” and I can still post to this
newsgroup.

Thanks. Hmmmm… I 'd guess that you’re posting from the email address from
which you’re subscribed??
Lyris is supposed to prevent unauthorized users from posting through any
interface. I know this is true from email and the web. I’m HOPING it works
properly via the newsgroup interface…

Yes. I just tried posting this reply from a bogus email address and it
didn’t made it through (the server accepted the message, but it did not
appear in the group). Anyway, any spammer could read the newsgroups,
take some valid email address and flood the lists. Better get the
authentication straightened out
Ralf.

Yep, I also use Forté Agent and have *not* specified any password for
the OSR list server, just “my” email address.
So, as usual in NGs, there is no guarantee any post with my email
address is actually from me.

I’m afraid that’s the best the list is going to be able to do.
No membership = your posting doesn’t get emailed and doesn’t show up.
