Are you using the Microsoft symbol
server for your symbols? If not, you should really do so (read the
documentation on the page I cited above.

Reading above paragraph two questions arose:

  • why? Any advantage against installing local symbols or local company
symbol server using MSDN symbols if we omit space?
  • how to use MS symbol server through proxy? Note I may not be able to
control proxy settings. Is it documented somewhere (excuse me if it is, when
I read this part of docs some time before it wasn’t). Also I was too busy
and lazy to examine which ports and protocol are used

Thanks.

The advantage of the msoft symbol server is that the symbols are actually
correct and more or less up-to-date with respect to service packs, os
releases, etc. So basically you can have ONE CONFIGURATION for your
debugger. On the other hand if your in-house symbol server has all the OS
releases installed etc. there is no particular advantage.

I’ve had zero firewall problems with the symbol server.

And the other fellow ought to listen to mr mason and get himself the
latest debugger NOW.
