Hello, guys !
I’m puzzled by the following question, and I’d really appreciate it if
someone could
shed some light on this issue…
There’s the well-known example of packet.sys from the platform SDK, in order
to listen to the network in promiscuous mode.
There’s also the Microsoft “Network Monitor”, which basically does
the same, and shows the results in a nice way.
Now, how come that I’m using the very same installation of MS netmon on
different platforms (NT and Win2K) and it works without any problem
(I didn’t try it on XP yet, but I believe it’ll work), while the packet.sys
must be compiled for different platforms ?
Note that I’m using a VERY old version of netmon, which was
released way before Windows 2000 was released (Network Monitor 2.0,
V5.00.943) from 1999 !
The big question is: Is there a way to do the same (I mean, use the same
driver / method for all platforms, without worrying that a new platform
won’t support my driver) ?
How does Microsoft do that?
thanks in advance,
- Barak
