Load Balancing

Hi,
Can somebody send me a source sample for NDIS IM driver for “Load
Balancing” or “Ip specific filtering” !?. else, a link where i can get the
source would be sufficient.

Thanks and Regards,
-Naveen

I seem to recall that the Win 2K PASSTHRU sample in the DDK had load balancing/fail over code in it - but it’s been a while since I’ve actually looked at that sample, so I don’t really know how complete the implementation is -

What do you mean by Load balancing ?
Having more machines and dividing traffic among them OR having multiple NICs
on a single machine in order to balance traffic among the two NICs ?

For the first option W2K Advanced server integrates that function ( I know
that but never used it before) For the second one, look at the PASSTHRU
driver example of DDK.

Naveen,

Take a look at the MUX sample in the DDK \src\network\ndis\mux. It
is similar to the PASSTHRU sample, but instead of a 1:1 relationship
between a protocol and a miniport, it has the complexity of 1:n
relationships, where protocol packets can be routed to multiple
miniports for LBFO.

There was a presentation of the MUX driver at last year’s WinHEC
(Hardware Engineering Conference), but I was unable to locate the
Powerpoint slide deck for you (I expected to find it at
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/tech/network/default.asp). If I locate,
I will send you a link or the .ppt file directly.

We do. Our LBFO IM implements “IEEE 802.3ad - Aggregation of Multiple
Link Segments” (http://standards.ieee.org/getieee802/802.3.html). We
do not use the LBFO mechanism provided by NDIS itself as described in
the DDK (http://www.osr.com/ddk/210lbfo_8z8n.htm). Instead, we handle
failover issues ourselves.

We plan to offer as individual products:

  • 802.3ad link aggregation module (LACP + Marker Protocol)
  • Frame Distributor module
  • NDIS5 IM driver (including both of the above)

Hmm, AFAIK, MUX implements n:1 not 1:n. Home come you think it is n:1?

1:n implies a substantially higher complexity than the MUX (and
PASSTHRU) samples demonstrate.
