When I try to go ahead and install it, it asks if I want to repair,
modify or remove KMDF 1.0. I don’t want to do any of those things. I
want to install KMDF 1.1 side-by-side with 1.0. The release notes say
not to install over it, but it shouldn’t try to do that since the
version is in the KMDF subdir name (KMDF10). I would assume the KMDF 1.1
subdir would be called KMDF11?
Does this distro have the wrong bits in it?

I figured out what it’s doing. It’s running the KMDF 1.0 uninstall to
force me to uninstall it before it installs KMDF 1.1. I don’t want to do
that. I want to check out 1.1 before I uninstall 1.0.
Why can’t they live side-by-side?

I ran the install on a clean system that never had a DDK installed on it
and it installed fine. But it named the subdir KMDF10 which I guess is
why the installer invokes the KMDF 1.0 installer, but it’s not clear
that it wants the user to remove the old version. Even after reading the
relase notes, it was only hinted at (said not to install over it, but I
thought that meant not to tell the installer to put it under the KMDF10
subdir).
This is less then ideal, but now that I know what it’s doing I can work
with it. You might want to re-release it with an improved installer that
puts it in KMDF11 and does not force the user to uninstall KMDF10 first.
If you do, please don’t pull this ISO off the website. People have been
waiting a long time for this release. Just replace it when you have a
version with an improved installer ready.

I just grabbed the download and kicked off the install. What you are
seeing is by design.
You cannot have KMDF 1.0 and v1.1 side by side next to each other. V1.1
is a superset of v1.0. When running on a machine, only the latest minor
version is loaded so you cannot have v1.1 and v1.0 on the same system.
As such, it does not make much sense to have v1.0 and v1.1 on the same
dev system. Once you are compiling against v1.1, v1.0 doesn’t come into
play.
You are seeing the v1.0 installer b/c you need to remove v1.0 before the
v1.1 installer will run. This is a bug in the v1.0 installer we shipped
which is why we can’t do this from the v1.1 installer. Once the v1.0
installer has removed the v1.0 bits, you have to manually restart the
v1.1 install from the Install KMDF link on the CD.
If you want them to live side by side, make copy of KMDF10 into a new
subdirectory (KMDF10.orig for instance). Then let the uninstaller run
and remove the v1.0 bits.

One more comment.
There is no “what’s new” section in the docs or in the release notes
listing the new APIs or bugs that have been fixed. I did notice the new
DMA and common buffer APIs in the docs and I’m hoping the
WdfCommonBufferGetlAlignedVirtualAddress bug (breaks if alignment is
greater then 4KB) has been fixed.

Just so I don’t sound completely ungrateful for the work the KMDF team
has done for this release - THANK YOU! I really like the new APIs -
especially the ability to get the WDM DMA_ADAPTER from the

Now I’m going to go play with it for a while.
