USB to serial converter works, but they used to be very slow 19K baud.
Don’t know if there is any 1394 to serial converter out there or not.

To clarify this, the USB converter needs to have the USB end plugged into the machine running windbg/kd. It cannot be plugged into the machine being debugged. IOW, to do serial debugging, the target machine must have a real serial port.

hi
Thanks for your assitence.i want to know is it importanat to run debug
version of os on target in order to use the windbg for debugging purpose.
In my case host has WinXPProfessional with sp2 and target has either xp
professional with xp2 or Win2k.
i usually have need to test the driver for both operating system.

It is not necessary to use the debug version (I assume you are talking
about checked build OS) of the
target OS to be able to debug it. However, in many cases it might be
very useful. I would recommend
to use both release and debug (at least from time to time) versions.
