IFS Kit ordering hell

Hello my fellow FS developers

I wanted to share you all with the one thing I never understood about file
systems.

This is what I wrote to xxxxx@microsoft.com and xxxxx@microsoft.com when
XP SP1 IFSKIT was released.

new XP Service Pack is born, and with it a new IFS Kit.

Service Pack, we were brought to believe, is our birthright(as an OS
users) as its main reason is to fix bugs and make the OS more secured and
robust.

So why should an IFS Kit update to the same Service Pack cost money (more
then shipping costs anyway).

And why every time I need to order an IFS Kit (be it a 1st time order or
an update) I hear myself wonder how come it is the most time consuming,
complex and slow, software acquisition process known to men?

Isn’t the technology to satisfy formality, available in our Net Services
and .NET days?
Must I mail or fax my License agreement?
Can’t I pay on a secured site?

With hopes for better IFS Kit ordering days…

This is the answer I got…

This new kit replaces all the other kits so it is a conglomerate of
data. It is not a service pack in and of itself. It released with the
Windows XPSP1 and this is how it got it’s name.

As for the faxing of the kit licensing, this will be the last release
where a license will need to be faxed. Our release management team has
determined that this is no longer needed and has a regular order page,
just like the DDK, set up for the next release of the IFS kit.

Well, I disagree with the conglomeration theory (XP IFS kit already had
all those really great DVD’s) but maybe it is just me.
And now the 2003 IFS Kit is out and it is just the same.
Can someone please do something about this ordering procedure??!!

You’ve got the name of the release program manager at MS. Why not write her
and ask what’s up?

Perhaps it’s just easier to complain on NTFSD than actually seek an answer
to your problem?

That’s funny, My SP1 IFS kit simply arrived one day (long ago). I didn’t
have to pay any additional money for it. I have a valid license for the XP
IFS kit.

Perhaps it’s just easier to complain on NTFSD than actually seek an answer
to your problem?

Maybe you are right and NTFSD is not the appropriate place for this…

But as the email log shows, I did try to “actually seek an answer” more then 6 months ago, after 2600.1106 was released.

And then again a few days ago, after seeing that the next release is just the same, and got no response on the issue.

Maybe if more people, who find the current ordering procedure upsetting as I do, will try to “actually seek an answer” things will change.
