idiosynchrasies of FileNameInformation

Hello,
I’ve noticed that the results of a file name query
(FileNameInformation) are not always what I expect. For example, I’ve
noticed that on NTFS, if the some or all of the path was opened using a
short file name, a short file name will be returned when querying for the
file name. These idiosynchrasies are fine, as long as the results of a
FileNameInformation query will always result in a fully qualified path. For
example, are there circumstances for some file systems in some NT versions
where a only a partial path is returned, perhaps when the file object was
opened relative to other file objects or something? On my Win2k system, it
seems that both NTFS and FAT dutifully return the full path regardless of if
the the file was opened relative or not. Unfortunely, I haven’t the
resources to test whether this is true on all NT versions and all file
systems. Can I always rely on the results of a FileNameInformation query to
be fully qualified?

Thanks,
Joel
