Howto install a driver for a non PnP device (win2000)

I’am using the following prodecure to install a device driver for a non PnP device plugged on a serial port:

  • From Control pannel I select “Add/Remove Hw”
  • After first “next” I select “Add/Troubleshoot a device”, then “next” button again (system looks for PnP hw)
  • I select “Add a new device” from device list
  • I select “No, I want to select the hardware from a list”
  • I select “Other devices”
  • On next window a press “Have Disk…” button
  • I select the path where .inf and .sys files resides

System’s answer is:
“The specified location does not contain information about your hardware”
???
How can I install my driver?
Michele

Your problem may have something to do with your Model’s section. I ran
into this problem while trying to install a non PnP driver that doesn’t
have a hardware component. Although your driver does connect to
hardware, the issue is the same. Specifically, the hardware ID. I used
the the inf from the ioctl sample from chapter 9 of Oney’s book as a
template. This inf file configures root enumerated drivers.
