Guys,
This is about what I wrote the other day in an answer to Bill McKenzie on
the subject of 1394 support:
===============
Bill, can you expand ? What do you believe they’re doing wrong ? Right now
we can do point to point debugging with SoftICE over 1394, by using the
TCP/IP over Firewire functionality of Windows XP. And that’s because we’re
too lazy to implement a couple of low level 1394 hardware drivers that
would
allow SoftICE to talk to SiRemote directly, bypassing Windows, like we do
with the current native TCP/IP and Serial.
===============
Well, this ain’t quite true, we have more than that. This is what the
development manager in charge told me, talking about the new 64-bit SoftICE:
===========
We have dedicated 1394 HW drivers for the target, and have had them for
months. This is a complete “shared” solution (live target debugging while
that target surfs the net), that operates upwards of 12 megabits/sec in
local testing. The master side reuses the existing XP stack, as there is no
reason to introduce dedicated drivers of any kind on that side of the
connection.
So, my half-jocular comment about not having low level 1394 drivers only
applies to the current SoftICE, not to the new one now in Beta 3 stage.
Apologies to all involved, my information was only partially correct.
Alberto.
