The last time I tried kernel debugging via firewire, in late 2004, I learned the hard way that not all Firewire cards are reliable when it comes to kernel debugging.
What cards/chipsets are recommended? Or to be avoided at all costs?
Does USB debugging work yet? If so, what operating systems can it be used with?
Thanks,

Get the card that OSR sells it is reliable an inexpensive.
If you thought 1394 was tempermental, USB is a 100 times worse. Not only
does it take a very expensive cable (can cost more that 2 1394 cards) you
have to plug the cable into a specifc port. Unfortunately not all systems
expose this port at which point forget USB.
Finally if you get it all working, it it is incredibly unreliable. So don’t
expect to be able to trust it.

I have never had problems with anything based on the TI chipset over PCI.

From my experience the VIA Chipset cards don’t work for debugging.
NEC chipset cards work well.

I recently successfully configured WinDBG (for the first time) for
kernel debugging over firewire. Thanks to the list, they recommended
the OSR cards, as well as the TI chipsets. When I ordered the cards
from OSR, they indicated they were backordered, however I did receive
them in less than 2 weeks. In the meantime I found a couple other
cards to try, which had the TI chipsets in them. I have had success
with all of the cards, first try. I have been using the kernel
debugger for the past month without any problems at all, I highly
recommend it (and it is fast!!!)
