This funny version ordering occurred because XP SP2 was the first
Platform that filter manager was released on. As people started using
it we had time to address those issues in the Srv03 SP1 and Srv03 SP1
and the W2K URP versions because they were released later than XP (and
close to each other). The docs should be clear about which APIs are
available in which version.
Note that we are working on an update to filter manager for XP SP2 to
bring it up to par with Srv03 SP1 and W2K+URP. I have no time frame for
when this will be available.
FYI, the binary in the redist are identical to the binaries in the URP.
No fixes have been made to the redist version. The redist was created
by a group in India and it simply took them a long time to do it.

Thanks for letting me know that Ken, that is kinda crazy to hear that
fltmgr has features in w2k that xp doesn’t have… For the last 12-13
years
I’ve dealt with dll hell in userland, so nice of MS to port that concept
to kernel land…
I was figuring the bug you found would of been fixed though; it took MS
several months to create a fltmgr redist., obviously the rewrote some
code. Kinda figured they would of fixed a few things along the way…

Unless Neal says otherwise, I would not assume it is fixed in the W2K
redistributable. Furthermore, it is *not* fixed in XP or Windows 2003
Server. The workaround (using ZwSetSecurityObject) is reasonable,
though.
The FltMgr in W2K (even in the previous Update Rollup) has some
features not
in XP, e.g., FltCreateFileEx. If you’re targeting multiple platforms,
you
need to aim towards the lowest common denominator. In the case of
FltMgr,
it’s XP; in most other driver issues, it’s W2K.

“if MS fixed whatever it was,
dozens of drivers would break” - why I was asking, I remember hearing
that
somewhere… I think it was in regards to the filter manager… perhaps
I
just stuck my crack pipe in my ear…
“This was a bug in filter manager. It was wrongly returning not
implemented. This has been fixed in the longhorn” - since the w2k
(redist)
version is new, is this fixed? I understand the filter manager is in
w2k
roll up 1, but I think it might be possible they might of fixed the
problem
in this redist (confirm/deny)…
Forcing a reboot is fine, I grew up with it… The only reboots that
piss me off are the ones where you don’t have the option of now or
later…
