Thanks, Neal.

This appears to be an update of KB 894608. Any hints about the differences?

Much appreciated.

No direct link. As Neal said, you “must contact their Microsoft support
person”. That means 1-800-MICROSOFT and follow the trail to Tech Support.
KB 905590 is a free hotfix (just KB 894608 like was).

Two questions,

First, what all hoops must I jump threw to get a license to redistribute
this with any software I might write? Since this isn’t being offered as
a download publicly, is it purely a licensing issue or is there a
technical reason developers must be aware of?

And Second, since this is now available for w2k, I will attempt my first
mini filter. However, I do recall in the last year or so several bugs in
the filter manager discussed on this list. One inpaticular if I recall
correctly was implemented in numerous filters; not sure if this was a
glitch in the driver or in the doc, I just recall someone stating that
if MS fixed whatever it was, dozens of drivers would break… I can not
remember the scenario or the name of the function that caused the
problem, none the less, I would like to steer away from ‘whatever’ it
was… Does anyone recall what it was? I did find in the archive
discussion about FltSetSecutiryObject (use ZwSetSecurityObject instead),
but I’m not sure if this was it or not, the info in the archive was
chopped up and incomplete… Were there any other issues like this in
the filter manager?

I was the one with the problem with FltSetSecurityObject. I got an answer
from Neal that said:

“This was a bug in filter manager. It was wrongly returning not
implemented. This has been fixed in the longhorn”

Using ZwSetSecurityObject works fine, although there could be a small window
where the filter manager wouldn’t know you’re doing something, therefore
making unloading it a problem.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to where “if MS fixed whatever it was,
dozens of drivers would break”. I know of no such issues.

Furthermore, the filter manager has been available in Win2K for quite a
while, in the Update Rollup 1. The redistributable is much quicker/easier
to install, although it still requires a reboot.

I’d encourage you to use mini-filters. The advantages overwhelm the minor
issues I’ve found.

“if MS fixed whatever it was,
dozens of drivers would break” - why I was asking, I remember hearing that somewhere… I think it was in regards to the filter manager… perhaps I just stuck my crack pipe in my ear…

“This was a bug in filter manager. It was wrongly returning not

Forcing a reboot is fine, I grew up with it… The only reboots that
piss me off are the ones where you don’t have the option of now or
later…

Unless Neal says otherwise, I would not assume it is fixed in the W2K
redistributable. Furthermore, it is *not* fixed in XP or Windows 2003
Server. The workaround (using ZwSetSecurityObject) is reasonable, though.

The FltMgr in W2K (even in the previous Update Rollup) has some features not
in XP, e.g., FltCreateFileEx. If you’re targeting multiple platforms, you
need to aim towards the lowest common denominator. In the case of FltMgr,
it’s XP; in most other driver issues, it’s W2K.

Thanks for letting me know that Ken, that is kinda crazy to hear that
fltmgr has features in w2k that xp doesn’t have… For the last 12-13 years
I’ve dealt with dll hell in userland, so nice of MS to port that concept
to kernel land…

I was figuring the bug you found would of been fixed though; it took MS
several months to create a fltmgr redist., obviously the rewrote some
code. Kinda figured they would of fixed a few things along the way…

Hi All –

Has anyone actually been able to obtain a copy of the aforementioned
KB905590?? I just got off the phone with MS Support and drew a blank with
regards to this KB #.

Is it really available and what is the magic password to get it recognized
by support?

Thanks Neal. Will this be made available for XP and 2003 as well?

The filter manager redistributable for W2K is now available. For anyone
that wants to use it they must contact their Microsoft support person and
work with them to obtain a copy. The KB for this is: 905590

No, there will be no redistributable available for XP or Srv03. For
those platforms you need to get the relevant Service packs. It was only
done for W2K because it was not released as part of a regular Service
Pack but as part of the URP.

FltMgr is part of XP SP2 and Srv03 SP1. There is no redistributable for
them.

This funny version ordering occurred because XP SP2 was the first
Platform that filter manager was released on. As people started using
it we had time to address those issues in the Srv03 SP1 and Srv03 SP1
and the W2K URP versions because they were released later than XP (and
close to each other). The docs should be clear about which APIs are
available in which version.

Note that we are working on an update to filter manager for XP SP2 to
bring it up to par with Srv03 SP1 and W2K+URP. I have no time frame for
when this will be available.

FYI, the binary in the redist are identical to the binaries in the URP.
No fixes have been made to the redist version. The redist was created
by a group in India and it simply took them a long time to do it.

Thanks for letting me know that Ken, that is kinda crazy to hear that
fltmgr has features in w2k that xp doesn’t have… For the last 12-13
years
I’ve dealt with dll hell in userland, so nice of MS to port that concept

to kernel land…

I was figuring the bug you found would of been fixed though; it took MS
several months to create a fltmgr redist., obviously the rewrote some
code. Kinda figured they would of fixed a few things along the way…

Ken Cross wrote:

Unless Neal says otherwise, I would not assume it is fixed in the W2K
redistributable. Furthermore, it is *not* fixed in XP or Windows 2003
Server. The workaround (using ZwSetSecurityObject) is reasonable,
though.

The FltMgr in W2K (even in the previous Update Rollup) has some
features not
in XP, e.g., FltCreateFileEx. If you’re targeting multiple platforms,
you
need to aim towards the lowest common denominator. In the case of
FltMgr,
it’s XP; in most other driver issues, it’s W2K.

“if MS fixed whatever it was,
dozens of drivers would break” - why I was asking, I remember hearing
that
somewhere… I think it was in regards to the filter manager… perhaps
I
just stuck my crack pipe in my ear…

“This was a bug in filter manager. It was wrongly returning not
implemented. This has been fixed in the longhorn” - since the w2k
(redist)
version is new, is this fixed? I understand the filter manager is in
w2k
roll up 1, but I think it might be possible they might of fixed the
problem
in this redist (confirm/deny)…

Forcing a reboot is fine, I grew up with it… The only reboots that
piss me off are the ones where you don’t have the option of now or
later…
