Experiences with DTM

I am hoping people will share their experiences with the DTM from Vista with
me. In particular I have not used it because of the equipment requirements
(being a small shop I don’t have that much spare around). I have a customer
I am trying to guide into the wonderful world of Windows Drivers (they
mainly deal with something that starts with L), so need to understand what
they will be facing. Some specifics:

  1. I have been warned off on using any the regular systems such as a
development machine as part of the test environment because of the
networking restrictions on DTM. What are peoples views?

  2. How big a systems do you need for the test console and test controller?

  3. How long did it take to get things setup and running, i.e. from start to
successfully running an HCT test how much time?

The Vista microsoft.beta.wdk.dtm group has some pretty frank info about DTM.

Unfortunately, some of us are not allowed reading the beta groups this time.
So what are they saying there - go or no go?

Well, to state the obvious, these groups are NDA so nobody’s gonna repeat what’s said there on this forum.

However I think it’s fair to say that, among community members at learge, the reviews of the DTM have been “mixed”:

  • The DTM has great potential and can be generically useful by test teams both large and small.

  • The DTM it is very obviously a work in progress.

Note that if you need the WHQL logo you’ve got no alternative. You’re going to use the DTM for that process.

That is part of the reason I asked, since RC1 is supposed to be comming
soon, and all submissions to WHQL starting 90 days after RC1 are supposed to
be DTM based. I haven’t had the funds to by two more multi-processors (test
console and controller) so I can run this thing.

I haven’t tried this myself, but I’ve heard at least one person claim to
have gotten DTM running on 1 box by using a virtual machine…

Don,

the 7/16/2006 version of the WHQL newsletter stated that HCT/DCT submissions will be accepted until Vista RTM + 90 days (this was a change from Vista RC1 + 90 days). That said, DTM testing is something we all need to live with, but you do have a bit more time.
