Drivers + WMI Instrumentation + Perfmon

MessageSee src\wdm\wmi\wmifilt\readme.htm in the current DDK’s it explictly
states you have to stop and restart the service. What it doesn’t state is
that you may have to do this N times, where N can be as much as a dozen!
This is a bug that has been there for quite a while, but Microsoft doesn’t
seem to want to fix it.

Subject: [ntfsd] Drivers + WMI Instrumentation + Perfmon

Fellow Devs,

I have recently added some instrumentation to my file system filter driver
and integrated the output with Perfmon as per the OSR Online article. It
all seems hunky-dory except for an unusual “feature”. Whenever I attempt to
use the “Add Counters” dialog in Perfmon to access my performance object, my
object always refuses to appear on the first attempt. The second and
subsequent attempt is successful until Perfmon is exited and re-entered
whereupon the same silliness ensues. I remember seeing some online lore
(which is now lost forever) which hinted that this is indeed a quaint
“feature”. This article, I seem to remember, suggested stopping and
starting the WMI Performance Adapter Service to get around the problem but
this proves fruitless. Can somebody confirm whether this is a Permonisim or
a bug in my instrumentation. Thanks very much for your help in advance,
