Definitely interesting. But you miss my point!. If, say linux OSes were
strictly sold for $50 or $75 or $100, the model is fine with me. “As I
said, what is really the cost of anything?” So some would say under
priced, or you and I will say Windows is over-priced. But what happens
is that it goes into the existing economic model, and price
determination starts from demand/supply and few other minor things…
And that is why I keep saying “Fair and Healthy competition”.
I would still like the IP-TV type computing for common people. For
mobility, there would be something else, perhaps something like the one
you mentioned here…

Well, in such case please check http://www.zonbu.com, so that you will see yet another Linux laptop (even cheaper one) that combines elements of both “conventional” machine and cloud-based system…

perhaps… For home computing how could we use one presentation device for

device for multiple use is the one I like to see
Did you actually ready visit the site??? Look - this is NOT for business use of any description. Instead, it is STRICTLY for home use. Basically, you get yourself a laptop-like deice for just 99 USD(!!!) with preinstalled embedded apps from them, and they provide online storage for your data for 12USD per month subscription fee. The whole thing is targeted for totally ignorant, in technical terms, users, so that ease is the main requirement here. Essentially, it is like mobile phone /PDA/etc. At the same time, if you happen to be an advanced user, they allow you to unlock your device and install the additional programs of your own choice/design…

Sorry if I mislead you!. But lets ( once more ) iterate ( at least the
direction I was steering this to ) —
(1) What open source software did to propritary software… And what should
have happened in the HW industry too… This is an example I tried to put
forward to prove my point that “free does not work with the current
systems…” AND I THINK WE WENT PAST THIS, everyone has opinion, and I just
did put mine. As I usually say, “not that it matters”
(2) The presentation device ( where we still hunged) was for the (a)Total
cost of ownership, (b) maintenance hastel (3) Greenness, though I did not
mention it specifically.
I’m not saying the examples you are giving does not meet the requirements
partially … It does not meet totally. Net computing is a paradigm shift.
A case in point is that these are stop gap solution to what I think is going
to be the future… Honest.
(Also once you get the same laptop, and use google, some XP embedded old
version or CE you will get very much the same, and in addition the defacto
standard Microsoft Office suite )… So sure there are lots of alternatives
by cutting corners.
Finally, if the model achieves success, nothing is better. Market would tell
the story I guess.
