Forget about this stupid idea. The user will boot off Windows CD and hit
“R”, having the same (and richer) functionality.

Not only is this stupid, but I have to wonder if you aren’t related to the
last idiot named shark who got thrown off the list for trying to get data on
writing his stinking virus.

Is it possible that ‘shark marin’ is now the sock puppet ‘shark mouse’? We

Oh but having observed Mr. Burn on this list now for several years, and
having associated with him in several classes at the first two DDC’s I would
say that Mr. Burn lacks NOTHING when it comes to temerity. I can only say

That was my first thought, and regarding inter-personal communication, I
would agree. But regarding Don’s professional character (how does he

Temerity need not be an insult, and I certainly didn’t mean it that way. I
meant it with the meaning of ‘audacity’, or ‘reckless courage’. After all we
have no evidence that Mr. S. Mouse is really Mr. S. Marin, so it was a bit
reckless to put forth that he is. It was however, in my opinion, exactly the
right thing to do.
Temerity is a bad quality only when the audacious actor has guessed wrong.
For example, I happen to be reading a biography of John Churchill, Winston’s
ancestor, the first Lord Marlborough, who had the temerity to reject current
military wisdom, march his army half way across europe, and commit them,
recklessly, to a full frontal assault on the entrenched forces of the best
army of France, and in doing so ended forever Louis XIV’s efforts to
establish French Hegemony over Europe. Had he lost the battle of Blenheim,
Churchill would have been a minor footnote in the annals of military idiocy,
as it was he changed the course of history. But I digress

I certainly didn’t think of applying temerity to Don Burn as an insult.
When I first read Peter’s remark about temerity seldom being used to refer
to Don Burn, I thought, what Don is he talking about? But then I thought
about it a few more seconds, and realized that a person can have lots of
“personal” temerity, while having very little "professional’ temerity. As
an architect and designer, Don doesn’t appear to take unnecessary risks.
I think most of us can think of a few NTDEV denizens who have *LOTS* of
professional temerity.

I have a suggestion for your problem, which in my experience works every
time. Take out a penknife(sp?), remove the F8 key from the keyboard, done!

I believe that personal jabs, right or wrong, appropriate or
inappropriate, are uncalled for in a professional mailing list
like this one. It shouldn’t matter who the poster is, and as far
as I’m concerned, my answer at least will try to be the same
regardless of who’s posting - I often do not look at poster’s
names unless he or she is an old professional contact or
acquaintance with whom I feel at liberty to convert a
professional interchange into something slightly more personal.
But whenever I walk that rope, I try to build it towards the
positive side rather than to the negative.
So, I suggest that people left and right refrain from that kind
of action. That should include a “holier than thou” attitude
that some of the posters in this mailing list seem to have. What
I suggest is, look at everyone eye to eye, equal to equal;
attack the message, not the messenger; object to the
professional content if you will, but it should stop there.
One more thing: maybe we should stop sneering at newbies. Look
at history, we wouldn’t be where we are if we didn’t have a
whole bunch of kids who couldn’t care less for those three
letters after older peoples’ names. These were and are mavericks
who did and do things in their own way, and often were only
proven right after their death. Every one of us was a newbie
someday, and some newbies out there have more inside them than
many of us.
Alberto.

I didn’t consider it an insult. Mark knows me well (it will be 15 years
this fall), and I will express my opinion forcefully. This can be good and
bad, bad is obvious. An example of good is a forceful opinion while working
with Mark 12 years ago, lead to a project that required Windows NT drivers
which lead to the current phase of my career.

If, indeed, we’ve got the same person here, then this is not a case of
sneering at a newbie. The community was more than justified in staging an
immune response to the original ‘shark’.
If this is, in fact, a newbie with an unfortunate choice of alias, then
perhaps the level of sneer was somewhat excessive.
There’s a simple test. Ask the OP ‘Why do you want to do this?’ If the OP
declines to respond, they are either the same shark or someone else who will
presently deserve the same treatment.
Simple solution for new people entering the group. Do NOT give us some
cutsey nick name you think is cool.
Give us your name. I am well aware that nick names do hackers make, but it
is always first in my thoughts when I see a post by Hacker, or Cracker or
Lord of the Rings or Shark.

While I in no way disagree with Gary, I think there is one data point worth
mentioning here: The OP was obviously asian, and it is quite possible that
“shark” is either an acceptable translation/transliteration of his name, or
a common nickname (as in “Chuck” instead of “Charles”) for people with his
given name. Alternately, many asian people moving to America simply pick a
name off of a list of names, with no particular knowledge of any inherent
meaning that it may have.
I do not have a clue if any of the above points apply to the OP. But it is
worth keeping them in mind as possibilities before wholeheartedly jumping
off the roof to a conclusion.
Now, all that said, wanting to disable F8 is something sufficiently unusual
and potentially disasterous as to require a detailed explanation of “why”
before there is any consideration of answering any way except “no!”. (But
note that he has asked a second question, which has so far been completely
ignored, and appears to be a reasonable question.)

convert a professional interchange into something slightly more
personal. But whenever I walk that rope, I try to build it towards the
positive side rather than to the negative. So, I suggest that people left and right refrain from that kind of
action. That should include a “holier than thou” attitude that some of
the posters in this mailing list seem to have. What I suggest is, look
at everyone eye to eye, equal to equal; attack the message, not the
messenger; object to the professional content if you will, but it should
stop there.
Very well said. True gurus have a selfless attitude and do not go about
boasting in such a mediocre manner.
