Current job market for NT driver engineers?

Hi all,

Slightly out of topics.
I am an software engineer from telecom industry and interested in
further my knowledge on Windows device driver programming. HOwever, I
would like to know more about the demande for NT driver engineers.

I live in Canada. In the past, companies here have difficulties finding
driver engineers. Nowadays I hardly see any posting for Windows driver
engineers. ATI of Toronto might need one or two senior level Windows
driver engineers but I have not seen a posting for an intermediate
Windows driver engineer.

Would anyone share his knowledge about the current demand for
intermediate-level Windows driver engineers in North America or Europe?
As a Windows driver engineer, would you ever be unemployed for a long
period of time?

Thanks
John

Not good now. I have been out of work for 9.5 months. Few openings
available, but it seems to be picking up a LITTLE, but I can’t tell if the
jobs are real or just companies trying to expand their resume stack.

I have more offers for jobs and work that I know what to do with, so I
guess it depends on your perspective.

Some of that does depend upon location and of course reputation. You have
good products and a good team of developers, so it is easier. So many new
jobs are listed as “local candidates only” and it appears you get filtered
out if you are not local. I guess they don’t want to have to negotiate
relocation.

John,

I have been doing Windows drivers since 1997 working in the Southern
California area. I have found that the demand for driver developers is
weak, BUT, companies who need a driver developer are willing to pay top
dollar for them.

The demand right now seems to be USB, Storage RAID, and wireless. I don’t
there is any demand for anything other than senior level people. Companies
want expertise and are not willing to grow their own.

There is also a large demand for Linux and FreeBSD driver developers.
Companies seem to be more willing to accept less qualified developers in
this area. Demand seems to be Storage drivers, USB, and embedded experience
here.

Strictly my personal experience,
Hope this helps,
David Eaves
