Checked version of ndis.sys

Can someone please tell me where to get a checked version of ndis.sys for XP SP2. I downloaded the entire checked build but am unable to get at just ndis.sys. Thanks…

You should be able to open the .cab file containing the checked build.

Find ndis.sy_

Use the expand tool to resurrect ndis.sys

expand ndis.sy_ ndis.sys

The DDK topic “Installing Just the Checked Operating System and HAL” briefly mentions this in Step 2.

There are a few articles on OSR Online (http://www.osronline.com) that should be helpful.

You should have a file named ndis.sy_ there.
Use expand ndis.sy_ ndis.sys to expand it.

The file I downloaded is a self-extracting exe. Should I have downloaded a different
file?

Thanks…

The checked build I have is self-extracting exe that tries to install. It unzips itself into a temp directory and then fails to install (which is good, I don’t want it to install). Then it deletes the temp directory, leaving me without the file I need. Is there another file I can downnload?

Here’s a hack, but it has worked multiple times for me. Start the install, using the self-extracting ZIP/EXE file. Allow it to fail, but do NOT click “Cancel” or dismiss the install dialog. Find the temp directory containing all of the uncompressed files. Copy that directory tree to some other location. Now you have your own extracted copy. When you need a checked binary, such as ndis.sys, search that tree. “dir /s/b ndis.sys” (run from the copied tree) is one of the easier ways.

Arlie already mentioned the best way that I know of the accomplish this.
I’ve done this myself a few times with NDIS.SYS. You’re 90% there.
All you need to do is, when you get the dialog about failing to install,
go find the temporary folder, which is ususally in one of three places
(these are not all equally likely; I don’t know which is the most):

Under “\Documents and Settings<your user name>\Local
Settings\Temp,” unless you have changed the “%TEMP%”
environment variable, in which case, it might be found there.

- or -

- In a randomly named folder under the root directory of the logical
driver on your system with the most free space

- or -

- In a randomly named folder under the root directory of the logical
drive on which you executed the self-extractor.

In all:

- Start to expand
- Don’t press ON or Cancel
- Find temporary folder
- copy as much of it as you can (you may get a violation at the top
level)
- Press cancel
- Find NDIS.SY_
- Expand NDIS.SY_ NDIS.SYS

I can’t say that I know

This might be even easier:

The executable is a common SFX (self-extracting) cabinet. 7-zip (and probably other unzip utils as well) can read, browse and extract individual files directly from the executable.

Thanks, that worked…,
