Beginners question

Hi,

I am currently looking to implement several file system filters. What I am
interested in is how useful/important is one of the seminars on file
system driver development (i.e. OSR Developing File Systems for
Windows). What I need is a cost - benefit type analysis. For example,
if attendance at such a seminar will only save a week or two from
development time (and I do not believe that this is the case) I do not
think that I can get management to spring for the course. However, if
attendance at such a seminar would save several months of work then
management would spring for the course.

I know that this type of question is entirely subjective, and also it
depends
on the person taking the course. But any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,
George Huber

Well, you said yourself exactly what I was going to say. It really
depends on the person taking the training. If you are talking about
someone who has no knowledge of driver development - then you probably
need to start him/her at an earlier level than OSR file system
development. The value from that point on really depends the experience
level of that developer and the complexity of the filter he/she is
writing. Passive filters can be quite a bit easier to write than active
filters (where the filter modifies the requests).

You should probably look at the Microsoft sources and at OSR. Microsoft
provides the IFSKIT for XP and WIN2K. This gives you basic
documentation and some simple samples for around $1k. OSR provides a
variety of services, ranging from training, full development kits for
filters and file systems and consulting services. They have a lot of
experience and their training and other services can save you time -
both up front and in the long run - by avoiding a lot of mistakes
(incorrect assumption) that are made about Windows file system and
filter drivers. This stuff is marginally documented - so assumptions
are often part of the equation - unfortunately. OSR will quote you
costs for their services when you contact them - so you need to do that
to do the cost - benefit analysis.

Best of luck George.

I highly recommend taking an OSR Seminar(s). If you know nothing about
drivers, then the 5 day advanced drivers class, which includes the base
drivers class, then take the filesystems class. The debugging class will
also save you many days in opening the doors of how to debug and how the
OS works on a refined level, of course using WinDbg.

As far as how much time it will save? This highly depends on how fast
you can learn this in your own but the classes give you a jump start
that is invaluable to development of drivers, no matter how fast you
learn the material.

For me, the filesystems class was key in getting me through my first
filesystem implementation in a ‘management acceptable’ timeframe!
