the call is only supported with Service Pack 6.

Wrong. From the MSDN library:
“Windows NT/2000: Requires Windows NT 3.5 or later.”
You could mixed GetVersionEx with VerifyVersionInfo.

Try the ProductOptions registry key.
“WinNT” for workstation.
“ServerNT” for server.
“LanmanNT” for domain controller.
