Hi,
I was wondering, why don’t the OSR ppl make a CHM/PDF of the articles in the
site, that can be downloaded abd used offline also? I do not have internet
at home, and this would immensely speed up the learning process. More over,
google desktop can help in the search also!
I believe, many of us will benfit from this!
Well, OSR folks? What do you think of it? Can it be done?

While we appreciate hearing from OSR Online users, it’s probably best to note that this isn’t the OSR feedback list. So, feedback on OSR Online should really be sent directly to xxxxx@osr.com
Note that we presently DO offer a method for printing or emailing articles already (look at the upper right hand corner of the page when viewing an article). Do these not work for you?
Having said that, I *do* like the idea of providing the articles in PDF form instead of text. I’m going to put that on my prioritized list of things to do – Right after “finish the KMDF book” and “Start the new Microsoft Press book on Writing Drivers for Windows Vista.”
I *do* appreciate the feedback,
Peter

well…I posted this one on the NTDEV list becasuse previously there have
been postings regarding other SOR products, like the Nagar book. Anotehr
reason was that the general public might have opinions too!
Anyway, since you have replied here, I taket he liberty to write here again.
I think one composite chm is a better idea. they yield better to searches,
and also most of the articles have code with them, those can also be
embedded in a ch, ( I see MSDN sampels ths way).
Well…thanks fo the reply…
waiting for this to hapen!!!

Most (all?) of the articles on OSR’s web site appeared originally in
print in their NT Insider newsletter. I presume there is a way through
the application of cash to get reprints of old issues.

I am sure I will regret bringing this up, but it is difficult for me to
imagine even a semi-serious driver developer without Internet access,
even in India. Do remember that, although they are the sweetest
collection of nerds one might ever hope to meet, OSR is not an
international philanthropic NGO. OSR is in the business of making
money. It may be possible to create an automated script to convert
their web site to PDFs, but in that case, why couldn’t you do it yourself?

Yours is the first such request I can recall.

Because some of us take our job so serious we go into remote places like
high mountains with our laptops and solar panels to reach the right state of
higher consciousness in order to be able to open up our minds and
imagination to handle the most demanding challenges of driver development. I
personally liked the ability to download offline archives of NTDEV from an
FTP site like we could in the times this list was hosted by Atria.

See the OSR Online Store. We’ll send you a nice, complete, collection of all the issue of The NT Insider that’ve ever been printed. Dan tells me were even working on an attractive slipcase for the collection. I only WISH I was kidding – Clearly, Dan does not have enough to do.
Yeah, that was back in the days when one could actually TRUST people with other people email addresses. Them days be gone fo’eva.
…
We’ve talked about putting all the past issues of The NT Insider onto a CD-ROM and making them searchable. Every time we’ve looked into it, we’ve decided that it was a PITA. No need to go through the issues here.
Best we can do right now: Order the back issues. We get rich on selling those, you know.

If that’s really the issue then what about a search and replace on each of
the archive files to mask off the email addresses ?

Like we do now in the online version? Could do. I know that there USED to be a rather simple command procedure (at least, before they managed to ruin Lyris) that would extract all the postings and slap them into dl-able archives. I wonder how popular downloading the archives would be, though. Only about 20% of the posts to NTDEV and NTFSD are via NNTP.
