64 bit XP, more usage/support than development

With the proliferation of processors that can run the x64 XP is there not a
potential “driver scarcity”? My understanding is that x64 will run 32 bit
apps, but drivers must be compiled to run in the 64 bit kernel. So, how then
do you resolve the dilemma of installing x64 and watching half of your
system NOT function because you can find no x64 version of the drivers you
need to run that “other” half? Case in point: a user has ActiveSync 3.8
installed under x86 XP but upgrades to x64 XP and finds that ActiveSync no
longer works. The Windows Mobile website does not list any support for x64,
so does the user then have bounce back to x86 because he cannot find x64
compatible drives?

To me, this is the major hindrance to getting more widespread support for
XP64, the availability of driver support. You may end up finding that any
turnkey systems that are supported to run 64 bit will have a very limited
set of hardware options, basically to those that have driver support.

It could be worse, I’ve seen Athlon 64 systems that have labels that say
“Use of a 64 bit operating system on this computer voids the warranty!”
