1394 Debugging Revisited - Debugging Newer Notebooks Without Serial Ports

It looks like serial ports are going the way of the floppy and aren’t
provided on many of the newer notebook offerings. We knew this would be the
way it would go, but how does that effect debugging.

Basically I would like to know if folks are successful debugging newer
notebook targets (e.g. Dual Core) using the built-in 1394.

Any notebooks to avoid?

Any that were particularly successful (from a driver developer’s
perspective)?

I’ve used the Dell notebooks with 1394 successfully for over a year now.
The Latitude D610 I’m working on right now does not have a 1394 port, so I
am using Dells 1394/USB PCMCIA card. That seems to work quite well.

I’m able to debug my Acer Ferrari 4000 (AMD64) with the built in 1394 port.
It did not work when I used the full size port on the docking station, but,
after scrounging up the appropriate cable, the tiny port on the laptop
worked fine.
