WDK Documentation bug

Every time I follow certain links in the WDK documentation I get the
following page:

Sorry, no topics were found for the selected link.

Keywords = “”
IndexMoniker =
Source URL =

Right now that is a royal pain in the ass because there is documentation I
need to get a task completed: “Using Framework Work Items”. I never used a
WDF worker so this is new territory for me. Is there a solution available
for the documentation?

What version of the docs do you have? I can get to this topic just fine with
v10.7600.091209.01 (say that ten times fast). If you have the latest you can
always submit a bug to the Bug Bash
(http://www.osronline.com/page.cfm?name=bugbash).

The docs are all also online:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff545460(VS.85).aspx

Well that’s a big help – not you Scott — Help for the WDK help window.
All I get there is the version number of the document explorer. The version
of the Docs I use is in the 7600.16385.1 version of the WDK.

And I did submit a bug to BugBash, to be told it has been fixed. If so has
it been released?

The docs version is in the URL bar e.g.

ms-help://MS.WDK.v10.7600.091201/Intro_g/hh/Intro_g/ddksplash_d0c992d8-3d64-44cc-ab2c-13bcfa0faffb.xml.htm

I swear, there are times when computers hate me. I downloaded and installed
the docs from that web site, the files show 7900.091209.01, but I still get
the same error. Clicking on the linked Using Framework Work gives me the
afore mentioned error page and the URL is:
ms-help://Hx/HxRuntime/NavFailPage.htm?keywords=“”.

FWIW, I got in that state last week (no links worked) and I had to
completely uninstall/reinstall help. That fixed it.

Not sure, but it may be related to installing VS10 help on the same machine.
I haven’t bothered to investigate.

That sounds like a distinct possibility - help is so TOTALLY FACKED and
multiple versions ‘merge’ in very twisted ways sometimes.

I too would consider uninstalling and then reinstalling (probably ALL), but
be advised that if you manage to convince Windows that it needs a new
version of .net (for DExplorer) you can completely screw up your machine (a
la KitSetup), or at least that’s happened to me.

Good luck,

mm

Thabnks Ken. I just did that. I uninstalled the WDK help and then downloaded

Not that I’m necessarily advocating this, but if you’ve installed other
HXS/HELL help collections, they can screw up your wdk help as well, so you
might need to trash them all.

If you get really stuck, there’s an EXCELLENT tool called FAR HELPWARE that
has a HXS collection viewer that can sometimes figure out what the problem
with your help collections is.

Good luck,

mm

FWIW, I got in that state last week (no links worked) and I had to
completely uninstall/reinstall help. That fixed it.

Not sure, but it may be related to installing VS10 help on the same machine.
I haven’t bothered to investigate.

Dang – stubborn, eh? :frowning:

In truth, I uninstalled *all* help, including regular VS and WDK. Then
reinstalled (with nothing like VS or dexplore open) in order (VS then WDK).
It worked for me. YMMV, unfortunately.

Nuts! I get the same problem in my documentation for Access 2010, soo it is
very possible that it is a common bug. VS 2010 so does not appear have the
problem but then it now uses that marvelous scatologically bovine
piece-of-crap-web-browser interface. I double checked the Bug-Bash response
and sho-nuff it says “Already fixed in latest available documentation.” Well
guess what? I have the latest available documentation, and I can with
absolute assuredness testify that it absolutely IS NOT FIXED IN THE LATEST
AVAILABLE DOCUMENTATION." Sure I could uninstall the documentation for VS
2010, 2008, and Office 2010, but if there is no bug then why?

That’s as MSFT as it gets, both barrels - it works in the latest so just use
only that in all products OR you have to install them in the right order
because the installers are broken.

That’s as MSFT as it gets, both barrels - it works in the latest so just use
only that in all products OR you have to install them in the right order
because the installers are broken.

Dang – stubborn, eh? :frowning:

In truth, I uninstalled *all* help, including regular VS and WDK. Then
reinstalled (with nothing like VS or dexplore open) in order (VS then WDK).
It worked for me. YMMV, unfortunately.

Thabnks Ken. I just did that. I uninstalled the WDK help and then downloaded
and installed it fresh. Still no joy.

FWIW, I got in that state last week (no links worked) and I had to
completely uninstall/reinstall help. That fixed it.

Not sure, but it may be related to installing VS10 help on the same machine.
I haven’t bothered to investigate.

I swear, there are times when computers hate me. I downloaded and installed
the docs from that web site, the files show 7900.091209.01, but I still get
the same error. Clicking on the linked Using Framework Work gives me the
afore mentioned error page and the URL is:
ms-help://Hx/HxRuntime/NavFailPage.htm?keywords=“”.

Well, yes… it is.

To be fair, that’s a response from the BUG BASH not from Microsoft. And, yes… it IS fixed in the latest documentation… that documentation is online on MSDN and the links work fine. Go check it out.

We rejected your submission, because your entire problem description was:

“Selecting a link on the “WDK Driver Kit Samples” leads to the following page: “ms-help://Hx/HxRuntime/NavFailPage.htm?keywords=””" and the following display:

Sorry, no topics were found for the selected link."

(see the bug report we’re discussing here: http://www.osronline.com/bb.cfm?CFGRIDKEY=779A91FC-E8C1-C487-C6217E747DB3800B)

Not only could none of us reviewing the bug repro the problem on our own systems, but it clearly did not repro online with the latest MSDN documentation. Two people (including me) reviewed your bug and both of us decided it was either “not a bug” or “already fixed” – we decided to go with “Already fixed in the latest available documentation.”

Perhaps if you told us “I installed X, then Y, and then none of the links in the X docs work” that would have been a more useful bug report.

Sooo… if you’d like to take the time to do some problem isolation, and provide a clear and complete description of the problem you’ve experienced with a set of nice, clear, repro steps, we’ll be happy to have you submit this bug again.

Very well sir I shall do that.

I did check things on the WDK that I currently have installed on my target,
and those links do indeed work. But, that system only has the WDK installed
with its Help.
