Does anyone else want to see WinDBG with...

Some indicators on the GUI that show activity on the kernel serial
connection? Right after the release of version 2, I asked the WinDBG team,
through the windbgfb alias at MSFT, for just that. I even sent them a
picture of one possible layout. They politely accepted the suggestion, and
suggested using Ctrl+Alt+D, which works, but is an obnoxious alternative, to
put it mildly. Aside from that, apparently, they didn’t do anything else
with it, since there still isn’t anything like that evident in the latest
'Bag. Since they’ve just released a new version, now seems like a pretty
good time to try to get this on the feature list for the next release. So
I’m trying to find out if I am the only one who wants this. If I am, then I
will drop it. If I’m not, then please speak up, so the WinDBG team can see
if there is enough demand to warrant this.

So what do I mean? Well, back in the bad old days of NT4, the blue boot
screen showed TX and RX on the serial connection, but that wasn’t included
in Win2K. Why was that useful? There were occasions when the connection
got unsynchronized, and the pattern the indicators flashed was a clear
telltale indication that it was in that state. Now, when the system is
apparently out to lunch, I have to Ctrl+Alt+R blindly, and hope the system
comes back, or Ctrl+Alt+D, which spews lots of gunk into the command window.

So, is there anyone else out there that would like some serial connection
activity indicators on the WinDBG GUI, or am I the only one?

As long as it doesn’t add any traffic on the serial
line (like keep-alives just to keep the indicators
blinking) I think it would be useful.

Now that is a waste of programming time, and it is still unreliable, when
you can go to a local computer swap meet and for $5 buy a DB-9/DB-9 or
DB-25/DB-25 connector that has an LED for every signal state in a serial
connection.

No, I don’t want that! I just want a TX and RX indicator of some kind, that
displays on the GUI when a packet arrives or departs. They already have to
*process* the packets, it seems trivial to display that it’s happening.
Like the NIC or dialup adapter icon(s) in the SysTray.
