Installing Checked Vista on VMWARE

My apologies if this has been treated elsewhere.

I recently tried to install several different types of checked Vista and
later versions on a VMWARE target (6.5.1 single and twin processor). Things
chug on for a while and then it BSODs with an unhandled exception with the
exception being STATUS_ASSERTION_FAILED. Of course we are booted from the
DVD at this point and so I have no debugger attached

All that Googling showed me was some discussion in VMware newsgroups which
end up saying “Why would you want to do that? just install the usual build”.

Has anybody else met this, and/or is there some secret sauce I am missing?
I’d really sooner not build my own installation boot disk, turn on debugging
and work out what’s up, particularly since most of the time I just want to
be able to use it as a source for the checked images (particularly the HAL
and KERNEL)…

Since you’re on VM6.51, are you installing it yourself or with their fast install thingie?
If it’s on your own, try different settings for the disk (IDE, SCSI, SAS), and remove all the unneeded hardware
at the time of install (USB, floppy, even network, then reconnect after install).
I did not try Vista checked build yet, but the above did help in a few other situations. (well just one
situation…) I think I had Srv08 checked in VMWare, though.

Are you running server or dekstop VMWare? And I assume Vista host and Vista guest? Installing VMWare tools after the install?

I hate to suggest it, but since its likely a VMWare issue this might be a good time to fork out the $49 for a support call. Ive found VMWare support to be pretty good. I run all manner of Linux’s (can I say that here?) under XP and Vista hosts, all version 6.5.1. The only issue I ever had was Fedora Core 4 crashing, which seemed to be more stable if I restricted VM it to a single core (Im running dual quad-cores). Might be worth a try.

Probably unrelated, but I notice VM sometimes has problems with its Easy Installer. When I create a VM these days, I always create the VM manually, then mount the install CD as an ISO on the hard drive. The install is always faster and never had one fail using this method. Never tried it with Vista guest though. Keep the CD(s) disconnected too, I think their automount is a bit too clever for its own good and Ive seen it crash the Vista host when it gets really confused who owns the actual hardware.

Dejan,

I actually did both (trust, but verfiy)…

Good point. I’ll try and report back…

Rkennet ,

Are you running server or dekstop VMWare?

Yup

And I assume Vista host and Vista guest?
Sp1, but yes,

Installing VMWare tools after the install?
I would do if I got that far!

I hate to suggest it, but since its likely a VMWare issue this might be a
good time to fork out the $49 for a support call.

Good point.

Thanks for the warning about the easy installer as well.

Is the offending module acpi.sys by any chance?

Hopefully someone will come up with better, but if not, since you’ve indicated that you need this
primarily as a source of CHK images, have you considered using IMAGEX or one of the two or three GUI
based WIM utilities to extract the files manually and store them for later use?

Uh, also, check the release notes for VMWare Workstation… sorry I didnt notice before.

http://www.vmware.com/support/ws65/doc/releasenotes_ws652.html.

6.5.2 looks like it contains fixes for Vista SP1 and SP2. And I can take my own advice too since it addresses issues Ive been having with Ubuntu 8.04LTS  They also list ‘Easy Install’ and using ISO’s instead of CD’s in the ‘Known Issues’ section, but looks like its addressed for Vista.

We’re both forgiven for not catching it since it was released 2 days ago.

Should be a free download if you have 6.5.1

Thanks to all for their suggestions so far…

[Version 6.5.2]

I upgraded and tried again with no sucess (VistaSP1/Chk and 2K8/Chk). Vista
BSODs, W2K8 just says “inatller has failed and needs to be restarted”. I’ve
also done installs from ISO and from DVD…

Is the offending module acpi.sys by any chance?

Sadly, the BlueScreen gives no indication.

If it’s on your own, try different settings for the disk
(IDE, SCSI, SAS), and remove all the unneeded hardware
at the time of install (USB, floppy, even network, then
reconnect after install).

I tried all that - same result.

I’m not blocked on this (I just used real hardware), but this has not become
something of a voyage of discovery. I’ll carry on investigating and report
back anything I learn.

this might be a good time to fork out the $49 for a support call

Is sounding like a good idea. And I will certainly investigate just
extracting the files by hand.

Thanks again

Rod

I get this as well. If you do not enter a key it
goes away. Enter the key later.
