AWARENESS: OSR Lists Migration

Fellow Community Members,

We are *hoping* to transition the NTDEV/NTFSD/WINDBG Lists to an entirely new platform sometime in the next few months.

Though we have not yet made a final choice for the new platform, we *do* know a few things that we want to share:

  1. Good News: ANY platform we choose will allow you to use the Lists either via a Forum interface or entirely via email. Maintaining a commitment to reasonably useful email access has made the search difficult, but we understand this is the way a lot of folks (at least one third of the NTDEV users) prefer to interact with the Lists.

  2. Bad News: Any platform we select will NOT support for NNTP. We are aware that a small but loyal number of users (about 20%) use NNTP to interact with the lists… and we know that those folks who use NNTP *really* like it. Heck, SNoone is one of those people. But trying to find a package that supports NNTP is close to impossible, and while we support the community and all, having the NNTP support custom-developed is not a cost we’re willing to absorb. This is the 21st Century, and we’re basically done with writing custom code for this sort of stuff.

  3. When we DO migrate, our goal will be to move all the users. So, if you’re a member now, you should automagically be a member when we move. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO to ensure that your migration will work is to ensure that you’re OSRONLINE and LISTS passwords and email addresses are all the same. You can do this easily via the ancient OSRONLINE interface to the lists.

We’ll tell you more when we have a final choice of platform and a timeframe for the migration. In the meantime, if you have specific requests/suggestions for how you’d like the Lists and our community to look in the future, I’ll be grateful to hear them. Please EMAIL ME OFF LIST with your comments/suggestions/ideas.

Thanks! We’ll let you know what’s happening!

I’ll throw my suggestion in:

I would use Google Groups. If you have a G Suite account, groups can be very powerful. Web or email access. Groups get alias names, so you do not burn (or pay for) a user account for say xxxxx@osronline.com.

I have setup several of them. They work great. You can also embed groups in your webpage.

Anything but Google groups, really they are not even worth considering from
a security point of view.

I’d be interested in knowing more. With a paid G Suite account, you’re pretty much guaranteed security. Are there any examples of security issues with Groups? I’ve never experienced any issues. I have several open and closed lists that have been in use for almost six years now.

What possible security concerns do these lists have?

I asked for suggestions to be sent directly to me via email, not to be posted here… but, I guess posting here is fine too. I’m just glad for the feedback.

In any case, it doesn’t matter. We did not and will not consider Google Groups or Yahoo Groups. Everyone I know who runs one of these groups wants to do nothing but get off the platform. The new platform that’s supplanting both of these is “groups.io” – We very seriously considered this, but at the end of the day it does not meet our needs either (for a variety of reasons).

We want a platform that’s modern, well supported, and that has an excellent Forum interface… but allows a complete email-based experience as an option. This is distinct from a mailing list that has some ability to view the list archives. We have made this choice because the primary way the lists are accessed today is via the forum interface, even though the existing interface is both aesthetically and functionally – ahem – “challenged.”

Any consideration of Mailman 3?

Yes… it?s spartan, but it (FINALLY) makes the web UI a first class citizen (thanks to postorius). The price for hosting it is certainly right.

It is not the number one candidate as of today, however, because we are looking for something a BIT richer in appearance.

But a solid choice, I think. Points, also, for the irony of having NTDEV and friends hosted on a very Linux-oriented infrastructure. Of course, almost every option we?re considering is hosted on Linux. Our main web site has been hosted on Linux for years. Such is the way of things.

Thank you, Ms. Cran, for your input.

Hipchat?

Teams?

Yeah… no.

Seriously, I don’t think that’s the best model for this community. A group of devs who want to interact, or something… sure. But for questions and discussions, widely separated in time? I don’t see that model being super effective.

Of course, as ever… I’m willing to be schooled on this point.

To be honest,I would not mind switching to the “ironical mode” yet another time when I see statements like that, but I am going to resist the temptation this time…

Of course, almost every option we?re considering is hosted on Linux.

What about the one with “scary” (at least for me) feature of “troll management”?

Anton Bassov

Oh, yes… definitely Linux.

The ?troll management? feature is surprisingly common.
