RE: Hate mail to my response to "Execution of Dynami cally Generated code".

Dissent, yes. Dissent is good. But, it MUST be done in a professional
manner, using language and means acceptable to the forum in which the
dissent is being presented. Just as it is unacceptable for a legislator to
use such language, it is inappropriate to use that language in a
PROFESSIONAL email list. Either grow up or go to the kiddie lists where
such language is, sadly, considered the norm.

Yet we have to separate the issue of speech from the content itself. While I
do agree that people should be entitled to express one’s opinion - even
while cursing if that’s what we feel is necessary - thought control must not
be part of it. So, if you believe people should go into “disciplined
methodologies”, fine with me, that’s what you believe and you have the right
to say it - but you cannot demand other people follow suit. For example, I
myself will follow a disciplined methodology if it is the result of a
standards effort at national or international level - meaning the IEEE, ISO,
and so on - but I don’t feel at all obliged, to any extent, to adopt a
methodology that didn’t go through that level of standardization.

So: I disagree with both parties, each in their own way. Guys, refrain from
ad-hominem stuff, but by all means, respect other people’s right to dissent.

Alberto.

Gary,
I could not agree with you any more than I do. The computer industry is
starting to get a bad rap mainly because many in it do not act as the
professionals they should be. We are in a unique position in history. We
(computer science practitioners) demand the respect that Engineers
(Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, etc) have earned through the years, yet
we want to act like children and through temper-tantrums when we are
“straight-jacketed” into disciplined methodologies and options. We are in
an immature industry still, and it shows. I’m afraid our practition is out
of control and will be forced to start pruning its own in order to gain
respect and I suggest we start with those whose attitudes don’t belong in a
profession. If we don’t, the legislatures of the various states and
countries will do it for us, as they have for the Engineers, Doctors and
Lawyers.

Attitudes like Mr. Ramkrishna’s have NO place in any practition, let alone a
profession. His use of, shall we say, more colorful aspects of the English
language is unacceptable in any form of communication, except maybe some of
the Yahoo chat rooms. Mr. Ramkrishna, you may have been taught that the use
of such words is acceptable. That is incorrect. Please, grow up and act as
an adult or at the very least act as an adult professional. If you cannot,
please refrain from contacting this group of practitioners and
professionals.

Thank you.
