the commercial installer tool alternatives are enough to make one think that Windows Installer Service is a disaster. WIX just makes it straight forward without any proprietary nonsense and bloat. DIFXAPP has some quirks that can be managed. The only issues I hit were related to having to support a transition from NSIS based installers to WIX produce MSI packages. Coding the ‘clean up the mess left behind’ scenarios in WIX ultimately took creating some custom actions that would not have been necessary had it been MSI from day one. But that was manageable and now two years on from that transition, things just plain work.
I can’t believe WIX is free. But I sure am glad it is.
