Internet Symbols Server problems

I just wanted to say that I think the Internet Symbols server for windbg is
a great idea and all I can say is IMPROVE IT! I’ve been trying to analyze a
crash dump from NT 4 and can’t for the life of me find the right symbols,
even though I got the exact ones for the version that the user said he was
running.

All of this headache could completely be avoided if the internet symbols
server worked better. It should have the symbols for every version of
windows known to man and do all of the checking seamlessly in the
background. I don’t know anybody who is working at an office that doesn’t
have internet access these days. Therefore, nobody should EVER have to
download and install the symbols on their local machine. In fact, you
shouldn’t even need to specify a symbols server. You should just have to
check a box saying, “use the internet symbols server” and then windbg would
make a request automatically to find the distributed server that it should
go to and then download the symbol files that you need, even displaying
download progress for long downloads.

Don’t get me wrong, I think that windbg has undergone some major
improvements. I just think that this particular feature has the potential
to drastically improve kernel mode debugging life as we know it and hasn’t
quite reached it yet.

Thanks,
Carl Youngblood

Microsoft quote: from the DDK/Debugging site:

Please note that this symbol server does not currently work for Windows
NT 4.0 users. The Debugging Tools for Windows 4.0 package, scheduled for
release late December, will contain this feature.

Who exactly are you trying to tell this to? If you actually want to
send it to the team that handles the symbol server on the internet then
why don’t you send it to the e-mail address listed on the symbol server
page?
