Debugging with 1394 (aka Firewire) has been added to WinXP. Just like
everything else it is not perfect and has it’s own set of issues, just
like COM port do.

USB debugging support is not available.

Microsoft would like to dump serial ports entirely (they suggested it
but
got push-back and retained support in XP, though I’m suspecting it will
be
gone for the next version of windows) and go with USB and/or FireWire
(etc.) for debugging. I have not tried USB debugging with XP but it’s
supposed to work…
